Adapted wheelchairs for children and young people with disabilities
“Changing Lives” is the motto we share with our long-term partners from the Motivation Foundation, Romania. Thanks to them, our girls Fanka and Gita now have new tailor-made wheelchairs, adapted to their specific disabilities and their needs. For free.
Fanny and Gita are sisters who have been living in one of our small group homes in Kazanlak since 2015. They have severe physical disabilities and are unable to stand up or sit independently. And this is more than necessary for them to have a full life, to be fed, to be able to play with their friends, and to go to school. Since last week this is all possible with the new wheelchairs that are specially constructed according to their size and needs.
Our partnership with the Motivation team began in 2016 when we first contacted them for custom-made strollers for four of our children with severe physical disabilities. Motivation is committed to creating and adapting wheelchairs for the needs of people with disabilities so they can live independently and get around on their own. The way it works is we send in advance the measurements, diagnoses as well as the age of the children. They then travel the whole distance from Romania to Kazanlak and within one day they deliver and fit the wheelchairs on the spot so that they are comfortable and match the specific needs of the children. Over the past five years, they have done this several times for the children who live with us in our homes in Kazanlak. The wheelchairs are not new but refurbished and assembled from different parts so each one is unique and fitting.
We are very grateful for the partnership, the attentiveness and the precision with which our colleagues from the Motivation Foundation in Romania work. The radiant smiles of the girls and the appreciation of our social workers are as great as the professionalism and heartiness of the Romanian team.
