The future is in my hands

Independence begins with a decision that may seem small at first glance – trying something new, believing in yourself, and taking that first step.

Two of our young people from Kazanlak are embarking on this journey thanks to the project “The Future Is in My Hands,” which includes practical training in barbering and mentoring support and is funded by the “Address for 30 Young People” initiative of ADDRESS Real Estate and BCause Foundation.

As an unaccompanied refugee child, Karim* has already come a long way in his journey of adaptation. Thanks to Cedar’s support, he speaks Bulgarian well, attends school, plays soccer, and has built a circle of friends where he feels at ease and accepted. He often shares that he dreams of one day being independent and helping his family. He clearly understands how important it is to have a profession that gives him security and the opportunity to support himself.

He is drawn to barbering because it allows him to work with his hands and see the tangible results of his labour. He likes the idea of boosting people’s self-esteem and interacting with a variety of clients. He envisions himself as a skilled and successful professional who meets interesting people and gradually builds a reputation for himself. This vision of the future motivates him to actively participate in the training and to make an effort to acquire new knowledge and skills.

Also participating in the course is Ivan*, who has a strong interest in fashion and appearance. For him, the way he looks is a form of self-expression – he pays attention to details, follows trends, and cares about his overall appearance. This interest naturally leads him to barbering.

Ivan sees this as an opportunity not only to learn a new skill but also to grow in a field that truly excites him. For him, the training is a chance to build confidence and take the first step toward a career where he can be creative and work with people – something that brings him satisfaction.

Both young men have already had their first hands-on experience with the work of a barber. In a calm and supportive environment, they applied what they’ve learned so far by giving a haircut and trimming the beard of a social worker from the Cedar team. This experience helped them feel more at ease and gain even greater confidence in the skills they are developing. During the training, they also rely on a mentor who encourages them, supports them when they face difficulties, and helps them overcome challenges.

For the third consecutive year, Cedar Foundation is among the organisations funded under the “Address for 30 Young People” program – an initiative of ADDRESS Real Estate and BCause Foundation. Through this partnership, disadvantaged youth gain access to training that helps them confidently embark on the path to independent living.
