A Partnership That Changes Lives

Since 2013, Cedar Foundation and the American organization Orphan Sponsorship International (OSI) have been working in partnership to support disadvantaged children and youth in Bulgaria. This is one of the key collaborations that helps us remain sustainable and ensures that young people from our family-type homes in Kyustendil and Kazanlak receive individual care, real opportunities for development, social integration, and new experiences.
Through the collaborative Sponsor a Child program, each young person receives financial support of 80 BGN per month – funds used entirely for their personal needs and social inclusion. Often, this means having the chance to celebrate a birthday, choose clothes or items that matter to them, or take part in activities they enjoy – small but meaningful steps toward building independence and a sense of personal choice.

Among the many activities supported by the program was a recent trip to Rila Park – an opportunity for relaxation, fun, and shared experiences. The young people participated in team-based games, followed by dancing and music – ranging from 2010s hits to the latest pop tracks. The day ended, of course, with a traditional horo dance.
After all the excitement and dancing, everyone enjoyed a well-deserved meal together under the shelter, followed by board games and conversations. At the end of the day, after some rest, they boarded the bus back to Kyustendil – tired, but happy.
Nevena*, who had been hesitant to participate in group activities outside the home until recently, participated fully this time – a small but significant step for her. She returned smiling, with new memories to cherish.

Nick M. Hindman, President and Founder of OSI, shared that during his visits to our centers each year, he sees the positive changes in the youth, and the dedication and patience of the Cedar team never fail to impress him.
Events like this excursion are more than just pleasant moments – they are a vital part of the long-term transformation in the lives of these young people. They are made possible thanks to our donors, sponsors, and the team who work every day to provide an environment of care, respect, and growth.
