The courage to leave the nest

The courage to leave the nest

Children and young people with disabilities rarely get the opportunity to be more independent. Due to the fact that they have grown up in institutions or because their families paid more attention to them.

We at The Cedar Foundation believe in the unlimited possibilities of the people! We are brave enough to dream with the young people in our resident services, because we believe – in them, in their possibilities and ambitions. “And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”

Six young people from our family houses in Kyustendil and Kazanlak and two from families, who visit our Social Rehabilitation and Integration Centre in Kyustendil left the nest and flew to Turin, Italy. They spent ten unforgettable days together with Italian and French young adults as part of the project “Leaving the Nest”.

The project was carried out at the invitation of the Italian organization “Il sogno di una cosa” and the partner “Association FenêtreS” from Lyon, France. Its main objectives were to encourage the exchange and social inclusion of young people with disabilities, as well as to give them the opportunity to be more self-sufficient and confident in their skills.

During the exchange, the young adults participated in a number of group activities on topics such as “Home Management”, “Mobility on the Territory,” “Food and Cooking,” “Leaving the Nest.” In Turin they visited a didactic animal farm and lots of the sights of the town. They took part in orientation race, they created ice cream and played in a football tournament together with representatives of the other 2 organizations.

Each of the groups prepared a thematic evening with traditional food, music and dancing for their country. The team of The Cedar Foundation presented folk dance in national costumes, sang “Edna balgarska roza” and prepared dishes typical of Bulgarian culture.

The behavior of all the girls and boys was bold and sincere, both in the serious moments of group work and entertaining sessions. The Cedar Foundation and each of the youngsters left a deep trace in the Italian and French group and created valuable friendships that will always keep in their hearts!

They say the best gift a parent can give to his child is to give him roots and wings. Roots to know where he belongs and wings so that he can feel free to fly and create his own story.
The story of our children is not with an unexpected ending. It is just the beginning of the flight – only possible when there is a place to return expected and wanted at home. A home like The Cedar Foundation’s family houses.

This video, created by the Italian organization, shows our precious moments together!
