Renovating

PROJECTS

Renovating Orphanages and Schools

The Cedar Foundation believes that the best place for a child is in a safe and loving family. But sadly so many children in Bulgaria are placed in institutions, either because of a disadvantaged family background or because of disability. We aim to make the environment in which the children learn, play and live, comfortable, attractive and stimulating for their development.

There is an orphanage/ boarding school at Maglizh, a small village 15 minutes drive from the attractive historical town of Kazanlak. It is home to 40 children with hearing impairments. Some have speech impediments and special needs. In the winter of 2005 The Cedar Foundation renovated the children’s common room, in order to provide a safe and enjoyable environment in which they could play and spend their free time.

During this time The Cedar Foundation were hosting a team of four young people from Britain, sent by the Christian Charity organisation BMS_World_Mission. Kirsty, Abigail, Emma and Sly worked alongside our volunteers and board members in the renovations of the common room.

The Cedar Foundation transformed the common room from a dull and very cramped room in to a bright, spacey and functional play and educational area. And it is in this inviting environment that the children now receive the art and craft classes from the foundations’ volunteers who visit the children twice a week.

The volunteers have a humble grasp of Bulgarian sign language and are able to communicate with the children in this way. During their visits they play indoor and outdoor games and do arts and crafts in order to interact and develop social contact with the children.

In Maglizh orphanage/school for the hearing impaired The Cedar Foundation has planned to renovate the children’s bedrooms and bathrooms as well as change their windows. The sponsorship for this specific project was secured from international friends of the Cedar Foundation namely Maple Avenue Baptist church, Toronto Canada and from Ursula Costa-Dummermath from Switzerland.
