The fund-raising efforts of a number of Cork men has yielded a staggering €85,000 in aid of orphanages in Bulgaria. The money was raised by the Irish branch of the Cedar Foundation.
Three Cork men,Christy O'Sullivan from Shanagarry, Sean McNamara from Ballycotton and Pearse Penny from Togher set up the Irish branch in an effort to raise funds for the Cedar Foundation. Cork-born Mark O'Sullivan - who is a baptist minister in Bulgaria - founded the Cedar Foundation in 2002 to help alleviate poverty among children, particularly those who are physically or mentally handicapped.
The three men raised the money through donations from friends and acquaintances who were only too delighted to help out when they learned the extent of the work of the Cedar Foundation.

An impressive €55,000 was raised around the Cork city, while the remaining €30,000 came from donations received from the Ballycotton area.
Money raised in Ireland has a spending power to a multiple of ten when spent in Bulgaria due to the weakness of the local economy.

The funds raised will go directly to the orphanages and the foundation's other projects such as hospitals, a kindergarten and a clinic for refugees.
The foundation also plans to buy a farm so that young people who leave the orphanages on turning 18 will have somewhere to go where they can learn key skills and be steered away from a life of crime and prostitution.
Anyone who wishes to donate to the Cedar Foundation fund can do so through an account at the Bank of Ireland branch on Bridge Street in Cork city.
The account number is 47738512 and the sort code is 90-27-92.
