Social Integration

The development of efficient community services for persons with disabilities is possible only when considering the need for their social integration in Bulgaria. We have focused a lot of our efforts on setting examples of how social interaction can improve the lives of the children and young adults with disabilities. The increased community awareness of the problems they face every day becomes a resource for future positive changes in the public attitudes.

We support social integration through:

• Liaison for children and young adults to go to schools, daycare centers, community centers and town events
• Developing the program “Circle of Friends” which brought together children with multiple disabilities with young people from the community to create a positive social network – the program was developed and conducted under the leadership of the long-term Peace Corps volunteer Anne Balser (a special education teacher)
• Organizing activity projects for volunteers whose main purpose is to bring positive experience to both the people with special needs and the volunteers themselves
